“For every high priest taken from among men is appointed for men in things pertaining to God, that he may offer both gifts and sacrifices for sins. 2 He can have compassion on those who are ignorant and going astray, since he himself is also subject to weakness. 3 Because of this he is required as for the people, so also for himself, to offer sacrifices for sins. 4 And no man takes this honor to himself, but he who is called by God, just as Aaron was.” – Hebrews 5:1-4
Jesus referred to himself as the SON OF MAN over 80 times in the New Testament. God the Father wanted to ensure that the High Priest could relate to those He was representing. The Son of God became flesh as God’s way of assuring us, all these years later, that our eternal Great High Priest, Jesus, would also be able to relate to us, in our need, our lack, our weakness…our humanity.
He was Himself both Intercessor AND sacrifice for our communion with the Father to be restored forever. God Himself could not be our intercessor, for He is not a man. Yet, in His perfect omniscience, He established a system of atonement that would one day be completed by His Son…as a human.
“12 But this Man, after He had offered one sacrifice for sins forever, sat down at the right hand of God, 13 from that time waiting till His enemies are made His footstool. 14 For by one offering He has perfected forever those who are being sanctified.” – Hebrews 10:12-14
THIS MAN…Jesus Christ—currently in the presence of God the Father, waiting, interceding, offering worship, being worshipped—offered up the final sacrifice: perfect, complete in His sinless blood. He is our Savior and Redeemer, our Great High Priest, our King forever! Come, let’s worship Him together!
