When we get stuck, it’s not the time to go backward.

Peter only knew fishing as an income, and now with Jesus coming and going and things being thin at home, he decided to go back into the fishing business. But it wasn’t just Peter, Thomas, Nathaniel, James, John, and two other disciples who said, “We are going with you also.” John 21:3

They started where they had ended three years before, “Fishing all night and catching nothing.”

Jesus showed up, as He did when he called Peter into the ministry, with direction, and a multitude of fish. Peter jumped into the water and swam to shore. There, Jesus was cooking breakfast and told Peter to help bring some more fish here.

Jesus had a talk with Peter after breakfast. “Simon, son of Jonah, do you love Me more than these?” Peter said to Jesus, “Yes, Lord; You know that I love You.” Then Jesus said, “Feed My lambs.” John 21:15-17 This happened three times until Peter was grieved.

Jesus and Peter needed to have this conversation for Peter’s sake. You might say it was a bit of a confrontation on Jesus’ part, a bit of comfort, as well as simplicity. Peter was grieving.

Having honest talks with Jesus is usually not fun, but grievous. All discipline is. Hebrews 12:11

Jesus went on to talk with Peter about maturity. It looked less like Peter making choices, and more for others to require of Peter, to the point by what death that he would glorify God. Wow! So much for heroic acts, and sword-swinging rescues, just two simple words, “Follow Me.” John 21:19

Peter was concerned about John and Jesus had to say, “What is that to you?” and then three words, “You follow Me.” John 21:22

Our journey with Jesus in His resurrection is to follow Him.
