From the Upper Room to Gethsemane
Read and Meditate John Chapters 13-17
Five chapters that John recalls by the Holy Spirit of the conversation, Jesus had with them after the Passover meal was finished, until He enters His high priestly prayer before going into the Garden of Gethsemane for His last three hours of prayer.
Chapter 13, The Servant King, His betrayer identified, the new commandment-to love one another as He has loved them-given, and He goes where they cannot follow now-but will follow.
Chapter 14, Believe in Me, My Father’s house, I go to prepare a place for you, you know the way…Then Jesus explains all this over again along with the Holy Spirit who becomes the means to manifest all the promises He had just made.
Chapter 15, I am the true vine…you are the branches. Abide in Me and My words abide in you, bear much fruit, the command to love, the world’s rejection, and more about the Holy Spirit.
Chapter 16, Persecution coming, more on the Holy Spirit, you will not see Me and then you will see Me. Rejoicing at birth, joy made full, in Me you shall have peace.
Chapter 17, Father the hour has come, Glorify your Son, this is eternal life. Glory from the beginning of time brought together with the Father. I pray for them and those who will yet believe. Kept by the name You gave me, kept by My word, sanctify and send, as you sent Me as I sanctified Myself by the truth. I pray they be one, that they may know the love You have for Me from before the foundation of the world. The love which you loved Me be in them.
Read through these chapters and place yourself alongside the disciples as that stay in the upper room (Chapters 13 and 14) Then travel with them down to the valley of Kidron where to Garden of Gethsemane at the base of the Mount of Olives.
Enter into Jesus’ heart as He unveils truths yet to be fully revealed. Watch as Jesus shares of the wonderful Helper who was coming in His name and all He would bring.
Hear the new commandment given. What’s different from the old commandment to love?
Finally, listen as Jesus lifts His head to heaven and prays His high priestly prayer of completion and our acceptance.
Live, listen, and love your Savior for all He has done for you.
