For the next three weeks, we will explore the art of abiding in Jesus—In His word, in His love, and in His life with His words abiding in us.
This first discipline is the most critical to our discipleship and the most rewarding. It was the one Jesus gave, to those who believed in Him, with the promise of moving from a believer into a disciple who knows the truth and the truth makes him free.
Then Jesus said to those Jews who believed Him, “If you abide in My word, you are My disciples in deed. And you shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free.” John 8:31, 32
To abide in Jesus’ word is to live there. Taking up residence in His word, we find our life here. Reading daily scripture is the only way to know the truth. Jesus prayed for us all to be sanctified by the Father’s truth, declaring, “Your word is truth.” John 17:17b
Jesus, Himself, was sanctified by the truth. In other words, He submitted Himself to the truth in scriptures thereby rising above the lie.
James exhorts us saying, “Therefore lay aside all filthiness and overflow of wickedness, and receive with meekness the implanted word, which is able to save your souls. But be doers of the word, and not hearers only deceiving yourselves.” James 1:21, 22
Being a doer of the word comes through abiding. This is because we become performers, observing our new life in Christ and imitating, as a child copies their parent. Think of an actor being given a script (the holy scripture) and given a part to play. The script determines the characters, words being spoken, actions given, emotions shown, down to the internal thoughts and intents of the heart.
That’s what is happening in our abiding in His word. We are putting on Jesus, His character, words to speak, actions being given, emotions, and our thoughts and intentions in our heart. It is transformational!
